When a board-topper like Lee Hunter slides to No. 99, you do not overthink it, and the Steelers did not.
The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer. Every board in the league had Roberts lower, and that gap is the story.
The dealing tilted against them, just enough to notice. Interior defensive lineman is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the quarterback spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a three-down second-level presence. A clean fit for the roster.
Somehow Dillon Thieneman was still sitting there in slot 53, and they pounced on premier safety value. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Antonio Williams in the 85th pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Lee Hunter in No. 99 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Malik Muhammad at pick 121 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. The roster fit checks out.
Jaeden Roberts in the 135th overall pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Aamil Wagner at pick No. 161 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Circle this one: Ephesians Prysock at Round 6, Pick 35 is a fall that decides a draft. A need, and now a little less of one.
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Zavion Thomas. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Keyshaun Elliott slid further than he should have, and pick No. 230 is lovely value for the linebacker. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Miles Kitselman slipping to slot 237 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
