Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Dolphins were there to profit. Domonique Orange, the No. 76 name on the board, should have been long gone before the Round 4 slot. A dependable weekend that grades out a B.
The Tucker pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. Small wins on the phones, but wins all the same. The roster is better shaped than it was, with quarterback chief among the fixes.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 30 they get a press-man option on the boundary. More want than need.
In the Round 1 slot they get a difference-maker at receiver at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Nice patience on Dillon Thieneman, who had no business lasting to the 43rd pick. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Eli Stowers at pick No. 70. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Jake Slaughter in pick 75 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Josiah Trotter in Round 3, Pick 23 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It fills a real need, too.
You do not let an edge rusher like Jake Golday reach the 90th overall pick and blink. They did not. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They let Elijah Sarratt come to them and pounced at No. 94. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A tidy bit of business in Round 3, Pick 31, where Daylen Everette graded well above the range. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Domonique Orange at the Round 4 slot is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Jack Endries in slot 125 lands just on the right side of the ledger. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A tidy little value on Joe Royer in the 131st pick, a step better than break-even. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Dametrious Crownover at No. 146 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The roster fit checks out.
By-the-book stuff, Kaytron Allen at pick 148 squarely in line with his ranking. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Nadame Tucker at pick No. 149 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They paid sticker price for Jaeden Roberts in the 151st overall pick, and that is fine. A need, and now a little less of one.
Zane Durant in No. 176 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They robbed the room for Taylen Green here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They read the board right and Chase Roberts was the payoff at the 227th overall pick. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
