Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Anthony Hill Jr. got past him. The Dolphins do not have to explain a thing at pick No. 82. A dependable weekend that grades out a B.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. The Dion Dawkins deal gives the class an established piece to lean on. Stockpiling next year's capital is patient, if unglamorous, asset work.
Job largely done: quarterback settled and 8 of 8 of the wish list covered.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 29 they get a seam-stretching tight end, outstanding value to boot. A clean fit for the roster.
In pick No. 30 they get a plug-and-play piece up front at a price that makes it sweeter.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Denzel Boston in the 43rd overall pick. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A safety of that caliber at slot 75 is the definition of value, full stop. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
You do not let a linebacker like Anthony Hill Jr. reach the 82nd pick and blink. They did not. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They barely believed it either: Jake Slaughter still on the board at Round 3, Pick 23. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Taking Keionte Scott in the Round 3 slot is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. A minor itch, scratched.
A top-tier interior defensive lineman at a bargain, Christen Miller in pick 94, plain and simple. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They robbed the room for Jake Golday here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Davison Igbinosun in the 109th pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Somehow Nicholas Singleton was still sitting there in the Round 4 slot, and they pounced on premier running back value. It fills a real need, too.
Good price on Malik Benson in No. 151, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Beau Stephens slipping to Round 5, Pick 28 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Charles Demmings at the 177th overall pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Aaron Anderson at pick No. 210 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Zane Durant in pick 218 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Nothing to complain about; Sawyer Robertson went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Value with a capital V on Le'Veon Moss in the 227th overall pick, a genuine coup. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
