Nobody had Caleb Douglas this high, and it is not close. The 49ers reached 45 spots to get him at pick 121. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Corleone. The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer. They will answer for taking safety early while quarterback, tight end and other spots went begging.
The imported veterans give this class a floor the draft picks could not on their own.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the quarterback spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
Dani Dennis-Sutton at pick 58 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A real head-scratcher, Ted Hurst in the Round 3 slot is miles ahead of his ranking. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Gennings Dunker in Round 3, Pick 12 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Somehow Jake Slaughter was still sitting there in slot 85, and they pounced on premier offensive lineman value. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
You do not let an interior defensive lineman like Dontay Corleone reach the 99th pick and blink. They did not. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
No edge and no loss on Genesis Smith in No. 106; it is a wash and a sensible one. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending the Round 4 slot on Jakobe Thomas with quarterback, tight end and other spots unsolved.
Caleb Douglas at pick No. 121 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Kaytron Allen at the 127th pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Dametrious Crownover in the 138th overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A reach for Jaeden Roberts in slot 139; a little patience would have been rewarded. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
By-the-book stuff, Eric Rivers at pick 167 squarely in line with his ranking. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Domani Jackson at No. 175 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A minor need, but a need all the same.
They took Xavier Nwankpa at par in Round 7, Pick 27, which is nothing to complain about. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
