The phones were a trap the 49ers kept walking into, shipping out surplus on nearly every deal. For now it grades a C-, with the swing picks left to settle the rest.
However the rest shakes out, Wagner at that price is a win they earned. They are betting Douglas proves the room right and everyone else wrong.
The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer. Spending an early pick on safety with quarterback and edge rusher open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to.
It nets out as a middle-of-the-pack haul that neither helps nor hurts much.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 27th overall pick they get a load in the middle. Exactly the need they had to hit.
A market-rate running back, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jadarian Price. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Steal is underselling it; A.J. Haulcy at pick No. 69 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Fair-plus on Julian Neal, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It adds depth where they could use a little.
A surprising call. With quarterback and edge rusher still to address, they spent Round 4, Pick 26 on Jakobe Thomas, a safety they were not short of.
They let Michael Trigg come to them and pounced at the 127th pick. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They reached into another round for Jaeden Roberts, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Parker Brailsford at slot 138 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Caleb Douglas at the 139th pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Will Lee III is a better player than the 141st overall pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
They jumped the gun on Kevin Coleman Jr., taking him earlier than his grade liked. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Skyler Gill-Howard at pick No. 158 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the interior defensive lineman. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Zane Durant in No. 159, miles early. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Travis Burke in slot 168 is fair value, right on his grade. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They robbed the room for Aamil Wagner here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Jack Kelly this early at the Round 7 slot. The roster fit checks out.
