Somebody in the 127th pick was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The 49ers sat still while Chase Bisontis, the No. 70 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium. It nets out to a B, which feels about right.
The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. The 49ers indulged a want in Clark while a need in quarterback, tight end and other spots stayed open.
They will need Coleman Jr. to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through quarterback.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
They paid sticker price for Zachariah Branch in the 57th overall pick, and that is fine. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Dani Dennis-Sutton in Round 2, Pick 27 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Fair-plus on Caleb Tiernan, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
You do not let an offensive lineman like Jake Slaughter reach pick No. 89 and blink. They did not. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Circle this one: Jadarian Price at pick 99 is a fall that decides a draft. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
The board fumbled Kamari Ramsey all the way to slot 124, and they scooped it up. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Chase Bisontis at the Round 4 slot is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They bypassed pressing needs at quarterback, tight end and other spots to take Bud Clark, a safety that was not the priority.
J.C. Davis at the 135th overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Kevin Coleman Jr. in Round 4, Pick 38, miles early. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A straight-up fair deal on Beau Stephens at slot 161, value and slot in agreement. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Kage Casey at the Round 5 slot is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Zane Durant at the 166th pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Domani Jackson at No. 167 is a conviction pick that outran the value. It adds depth where they could use a little.
