The 49ers clearly saw something nobody else did in Nadame Tucker, taking him 40 picks ahead of his grade. The board is not convinced.
Getting Scott where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck.
Spending an early pick on safety with quarterback and linebacker open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
Jadarian Price at the 59th overall pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Keionte Scott in No. 95 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Bud Clark at the 111th pick is money in the bank, a safety taken below his worth. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Bishop Fitzgerald adds a safety and leaves quarterback and linebacker untouched.
Nadame Tucker at slot 133 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They took J.C. Davis at par in pick No. 134, which is nothing to complain about. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They liked Kaytron Allen enough to skip the value, taking him in the 138th pick. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A straight-up fair deal on DeMonte Capehart at pick 139, value and slot in agreement. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They read the board right and Joe Royer was the payoff at Round 5, Pick 1. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Beau Stephens in slot 161 is fair value, right on his grade. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A tidy bit of business in pick No. 175, where Kevin Coleman Jr. graded well above the range. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Zane Durant in the Round 6 slot lands just on the right side of the ledger. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They reached a country mile for Noah Whittington at No. 208, and the board is aghast. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
