New England Patriots

The Patriots bet the future on McCarthy. The board says B.

Start where it matters. The Patriots took J.J. McCarthy to run the offense for the next decade, and every other decision this weekend bends around that one. No fireworks, but a solid B.

The Johnson steal is the beam this whole class leans on. They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own. They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it.

The Laube pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over.

Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.15 · Pick 15 · J.J. McCarthy · QB · rank 23
In Round 1, Pick 15 they get their guy under center for the next decade, even if it was a touch early.
R1.23 · Pick 23 · Tyler Guyton · OT · rank 29
In the 23rd pick they get a cornerstone up front at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
R2.2 · Pick 34 · Ladd McConkey · WR · rank 34
Ladd McConkey in the Round 2 slot is fair value, right on his grade. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R2.14 · Pick 46 · Xavier Legette · WR · rank 38
A slide stopped in slot 46, with Xavier Legette worth more than the price. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R3.4 · Pick 68 · Cade Stover · TE · rank 74
Cade Stover at No. 68 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A need, and now a little less of one.
R4.3 · Pick 103 · Zak Zinter · OG · rank 105
A straight-up fair deal on Zak Zinter at pick 103, value and slot in agreement. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R5.1 · Pick 137 · Dylan Laube · RB · rank 157
Value said wait; Dylan Laube in the 137th overall pick says they were not listening. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R6.5 · Pick 180 · Dwight McGlothern · CB · rank 161
Dwight McGlothern in pick No. 180 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
R6.18 · Pick 193 · Jordan Jefferson · DT · rank 185
A tidy bit of business in No. 193, where Jordan Jefferson graded well above the range. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R7.11 · Pick 231 · Cornelius Johnson · WR · rank 187
They robbed the room for Cornelius Johnson here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R7.14 · Pick 234 · M.J. Devonshire · CB · rank 191
M.J. Devonshire in the 234th overall pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
