The Patriots spent the pick that matters most on Jayden Daniels, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape. They moved the roster forward and banked a B for it.
However the rest shakes out, Newton at that price is a win they earned. A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want. If Rice pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a passer to set the clock by. A real need, handled.
Good price on Kool-Aid McKinstry in the 34th overall pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It adds depth where they could use a little.
A market-rate tight end, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Ja'Tavion Sanders. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Nothing to complain about; Kiran Amegadjie went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Brenden Rice at No. 103 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Luke McCaffrey at pick No. 137 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Circle this one: Jordan Magee at the 180th pick is a fall that decides a draft. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
They barely believed it either: Josh Newton still on the board at Round 6, Pick 18. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Garret Greenfield in pick 231 is fair value, right on his grade. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
