Nobody else had Drew Kendall anywhere near the Round 7 slot. The Patriots did, by 66 spots, and that gap is the whole story. Fine in stretches, shaky in others: a C+.
That is a running back worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain.
Call it incomplete, and check back in a couple of seasons.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 12th overall pick they get an anchor for the offensive line at fair value. A real need, handled.
A quiet steal in the 69th pick: Elic Ayomanor for less than the market said. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
No edge and no loss on Darien Porter in slot 76; it is a wash and a sensible one. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Cameron Williams in pick No. 77 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
The board fumbled Andrew Mukuba all the way to Round 4, Pick 4, and they scooped it up. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Elijah Roberts this early at the Round 5 slot. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They barely believed it either: Trevor Etienne still on the board at the 193rd overall pick. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A top-tier linebacker at a bargain, Jack Kiser in pick 217, plain and simple. A minor need, but a need all the same.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Drew Kendall in slot 220, miles early. It fills a real need, too.
They reached into another round for Tonka Hemingway, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
