Nobody had Kalil Alexander this high, and it is not close. The Bears reached 55 spots to get him at pick No. 239.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Lane. They will regret leaving interior defensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it.
Edge rusher is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get juice off the edge, though the board says they badly overpaid. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Chase Bisontis in pick No. 57 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. The roster fit checks out.
A big swing on Keyron Crawford at slot 60, well ahead of any board in the building. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Caden Curry at pick 89 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Ja'Kobi Lane at No. 129 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Kalil Alexander in the 239th overall pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A slide stopped in pick No. 241, with Thaddeus Dixon worth more than the price. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
