If confidence were a draft strategy, the Patriots would have aced it. Logan Fano at Round 5, Pick 31 is 54 spots clear of where he belonged. A dependable weekend that grades out a B-.
Landing Douglas that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the quarterback spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a weapon on the perimeter. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
A reach for Michael Taaffe in pick No. 63; a little patience would have been rewarded. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Tyreak Sapp at No. 95 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Dametrious Crownover well ahead of where he belonged. A need, and now a little less of one.
Circle this one: Tacario Davis at pick 131 is a fall that decides a draft. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Logan Fano at the 171st overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Taking Caleb Douglas in the 191st pick is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A top-tier offensive lineman at a bargain, Febechi Nwaiwu in pick 198, plain and simple. It fills a real need, too.
Aaron Graves at pick No. 202 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
No drama and no debate, Le'Veon Moss went about where he belonged in the 212th overall pick. The roster fit checks out.
A conviction pick on Josh Cuevas at slot 247 that the board grades a round light. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
