The search is over. The Raiders handed the keys to Fernando Mendoza, and the whole operation now runs on his development.
Every board in the league had Shelton lower, and that gap is the story. Bell falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
The roster is better shaped than it was, with cornerback chief among the fixes.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick-by-Pick
R1.1
· Pick 1
· Fernando Mendoza
· QB
· rank 4
In slot 1 they get a franchise quarterback at fair value. A real need, handled.
R2.4
· Pick 36
· Chris Johnson
· CB
· rank 33
Nothing to complain about; Chris Johnson went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R3.3
· Pick 67
· Drew Shelton
· OT
· rank 100
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Drew Shelton well ahead of where he belonged. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R4.2
· Pick 102
· Taurean York
· LB
· rank 118
The board had cheaper options than Taurean York at pick 102, and it noticed. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
R4.17
· Pick 117
· Skyler Bell
· WR
· rank 85
Taking Skyler Bell in the Round 4 slot is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R4.34
· Pick 134
· Trey Zuhn III
· C
· rank 127
Trey Zuhn III at Round 4, Pick 34 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R5.35
· Pick 175
· Tanner Koziol
· TE
· rank 167
A slide stopped in the 175th overall pick, with Tanner Koziol worth more than the price. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R6.4
· Pick 185
· J'Mari Taylor
· RB
· rank 194
A premium they did not need to pay, J'Mari Taylor a notch or two before his time. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R6.27
· Pick 208
· Bobby Jamison-Travis
· DT
· rank 218
They paid a round early for Bobby Jamison-Travis in pick 208, more than the board wanted. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R7.3
· Pick 219
· Jeremiah Wright
· OG
· rank 227
Jeremiah Wright in Round 7, Pick 3 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
