If confidence were a draft strategy, the 49ers would have aced it. Keylan Rutledge at No. 58 is 48 spots clear of where he belonged. No fireworks, but a solid B-.
The Rivers value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. The wide receiver spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the wide receiver spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 27th pick they get a cornerstone up front, a steep price for the projection. Exactly the need they had to hit.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Keylan Rutledge well ahead of where he belonged. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A cornerback of that caliber at pick 127 is the definition of value, full stop. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Joe Royer at the Round 4 slot is money in the bank, a tight end taken below his worth. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
No edge and no loss on Chris McClellan in Round 4, Pick 38; it is a wash and a sensible one. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
