Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Cowboys were there to profit. Jared Wilson, the No. 104 name on the board, should have been long gone before pick No. 174. It does the job without flash, and the B reflects it.
The linebacker spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. On the needs board they went 5 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most. The skill positions did well by the weekend.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a bell-cow for the offense, and a steal at that. A real need, handled.
They paid sticker price for Benjamin Morrison in pick 44, and that is fine. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A top-tier running back at a bargain, Kaleb Johnson in slot 76, plain and simple. A need, and now a little less of one.
Tez Johnson at pick No. 149 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Joshua Farmer in the 171st pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They barely believed it either: Jared Wilson still on the board at No. 174. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Circle this one: DJ Giddens at the 204th overall pick is a fall that decides a draft. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A quiet steal in Round 6, Pick 35: Antwane Wells Jr. for less than the market said. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A clean, defensible pick in No. 239 with a little surplus value in Bilhal Kone. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
You do not let a safety like Jaylen Reed reach the Round 7 slot and blink. They did not. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
