There is conviction, and then there is this. The Cowboys took Jamaree Caldwell a full 83 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend. They moved the roster forward and banked a B for it.
The Higgins pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. For all the activity, offensive lineman went untouched, which is hard to explain. They went 6 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
A modest surplus at the table, banked quietly.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but offensive lineman.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 12th overall pick they get a lead back with juice, and a steal at that. A clean fit for the roster.
Steal is underselling it; Malaki Starks at pick 44 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Jihaad Campbell at pick No. 76 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They will replay Savion Williams at Round 5, Pick 11 for years; that is how good the value is. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Oronde Gadsden II at the 168th pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A top-tier linebacker at a bargain, Jay Higgins in No. 170, plain and simple. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Nazir Stackhouse at the 173rd overall pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Circle this one: Raheim Sanders at the Round 6 slot is a fall that decides a draft. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Value said wait; Jamaree Caldwell in Round 6, Pick 34 says they were not listening. A need, and now a little less of one.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Fentrell Cypress II well ahead of where he belonged. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
