You can hear the double-takes from here. The Steelers took Khalil Dinkins at pick No. 224, roughly 106 spots before his name belonged.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. They will answer for taking offensive lineman early while safety, edge rusher and other spots went begging. The safety spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
Landing Orange that late papers over a lot of smaller sins.
So much rides on Carnell Tate that the real verdict is a season or two away.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 21 they get a weapon on the perimeter at a price that makes it sweeter.
Sonny Styles slid further than he should have, and pick No. 33 is lovely value for the linebacker. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Emmanuel Pregnon at pick 50 is the proof. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Domonique Orange in the 99th pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Trey Zuhn III at offensive lineman with safety, edge rusher and other spots open.
A tidy little value on Drew Allar in No. 161, a step better than break-even. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Tyren Montgomery in the 216th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Value said wait; Khalil Dinkins in the 224th pick says they were not listening. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Kaden Wetjen at Round 7, Pick 14 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the wide receiver. It fills a real need, too.
