The Falcons spent the pick that matters most on Michael Penix Jr., and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape.
They punted on interior defensive lineman, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. They banked enough surplus on Foster to cover a lot of smaller sins.
Good work on the whole, with interior defensive lineman the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
Michael Penix Jr. in Round 1, Pick 8 is fair value, right on his grade. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
By-the-book stuff, T.J. Tampa at pick 43 squarely in line with his ranking. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Malachi Corley at pick No. 74 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
No drama and no debate, Gabriel Murphy went about where he belonged in the 109th pick. It fills a real need, too.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Javon Foster in the Round 5 slot. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They paid sticker price for Bru McCoy in the 189th overall pick, and that is fine. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Curtis Jacobs in slot 205. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
