This is the pick they will still be bragging about in July: Jake Slaughter, the No. 55 name on the board, stolen at the Round 3 slot.
Reaching for Baynes left real value on the table behind him. That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 7 of 9 of the wish list covered. Value over need was the throughline, for better and worse.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
They did well to land Gennings Dunker in pick 56, just ahead of his grade. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Brenen Thompson at the Round 3 slot jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Max Klare slipping to slot 88 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
You do not let an offensive lineman like Jake Slaughter reach the 100th pick and blink. They did not. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A top-tier safety at a bargain, Bud Clark in the 124th overall pick, plain and simple. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A quiet steal in No. 164: Tim Keenan III for less than the market said. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Kobe Baynes in pick No. 166 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A wide receiver of that caliber at Round 6, Pick 22 is the definition of value, full stop. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They read the board right and Andre Fuller was the payoff at the 233rd pick. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Jack Kelly in No. 240 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. The roster fit checks out.
Nick Barrett at the Round 7 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
