Start where it matters. The Patriots took Caleb Williams to run the offense for the next decade, and every other decision this weekend bends around that one.
Every board in the league had Cephus lower, and that gap is the story. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped safety, which is a strange place to end up.
They went 7 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the safety spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 3 they get their quarterback of the future. A clean fit for the roster.
By-the-book stuff, Ja'Tavion Sanders at pick 34 squarely in line with his ranking. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A straight-up fair deal on T'Vondre Sweat at the 48th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Kiran Amegadjie at No. 68 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A need, and now a little less of one.
Zak Zinter at the 96th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Justin Eboigbe in Round 4, Pick 36 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They took Jase McClellan at par in the Round 6 slot, which is nothing to complain about. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A big swing on Joshua Cephus at pick No. 229, well ahead of any board in the building. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
