When a board-topper like Johnny Wilson slides to Round 5, Pick 33, you do not overthink it, and the Packers did not. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.
They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. The Gray pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at edge rusher, quarterback and other spots. Every board in the league had Rosengarten lower, and that gap is the story.
On the needs board they went 4 of 8, with cornerback the one that mattered most.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 25th pick they get an island corner. The biggest hole, addressed.
They will replay Troy Fautanu at the Round 2 slot for years; that is how good the value is. It fills a real need, too.
Payton Wilson in Round 2, Pick 26 is fair value, right on his grade. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Max Melton slid further than he should have, and slot 88 is lovely value for the cornerback. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Dominick Puni in No. 95 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A reach for Roger Rosengarten in the 126th overall pick; a little patience would have been rewarded. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending pick No. 132 on Cedric Gray with edge rusher, quarterback and other spots unsolved.
A wide receiver of that caliber at pick 169 is the definition of value, full stop. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A top-tier running back at a bargain, Dylan Laube in pick No. 199, plain and simple. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Curtis Jacobs at pick 219 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Dominique Hampton slipping to No. 245 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
