Somebody in pick 168 was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Cowboys sat still while Devin Neal, the No. 84 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium. It does the job without flash, and the B reflects it.
If Prather pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. The cornerback hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
Wide receiver was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 20th pick they get a matchup problem out wide. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Circle this one: Omarion Hampton at pick No. 44 is a fall that decides a draft. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They robbed the room for Derrick Harmon here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A linebacker of that caliber at No. 78 is the definition of value, full stop. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A top-tier safety at a bargain, Kevin Winston Jr. in Round 5, Pick 10, plain and simple. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
They will replay Devin Neal at slot 168 for years; that is how good the value is. The roster fit checks out.
Ja'Corey Brooks in pick 170 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Jake Majors in the 171st overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Samuel Brown in pick No. 187 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Kaden Prather at pick 189 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Michael Taaffe at Round 6, Pick 34 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
They reached a country mile for Jamaree Caldwell at the Round 7 slot, and the board is aghast. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
