The trade table was a mismatch, and the Chargers were on the right end of it, hauling in a fortune in surplus value. No fireworks, but a solid B+.
The Pearsall pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. Reaching for Stover left real value on the table behind him. Leaving interior defensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 23 they get a bendy edge with upside. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Troy Franklin. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Chris Braswell in Round 2, Pick 21 lands just on the right side of the ledger. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Cooper DeJean at pick No. 70. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
No drama and no debate, Zach Frazier went about where he belonged in the Round 3 slot. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Cade Stover in slot 106, miles early. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Good price on Roman Wilson in No. 114, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
No edge and no loss on Khyree Jackson in the 129th overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
By-the-book stuff, Dylan Laube at pick 143 squarely in line with his ranking. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A wide receiver of that caliber at the 155th pick is the definition of value, full stop. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Nice patience on Tre Harris, who had no business lasting to Round 6, Pick 9. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Steal is underselling it; Ricky Pearsall at No. 227 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
