You can hear the double-takes from here. The Cardinals took Tommy Mellott at the 248th pick, roughly 91 spots before his name belonged. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B-.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped running back, which is a strange place to end up. The Bond pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. They went 6 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but running back.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a quarterback's worst nightmare, though the board says they badly overpaid. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
The board had Isaiah Bond higher than pick 47, and the wide receiver fell to them anyway. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
By-the-book stuff, Omarr Norman-Lott at pick No. 78 squarely in line with his ranking. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Chris Paul Jr. at the 113th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A wild overpay on Willie Lampkin in slot 151, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Tommy Mellott at the 248th overall pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
