They finally answered the question that shadows every other one. Drake Maye is the Patriots' quarterback, full stop.
That interior defensive lineman hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. The Wright value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere.
They will need Weaver to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it.
Good work on the whole, with interior defensive lineman the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 5 they get their quarterback of the future at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
A premium they did not need to pay, Patrick Paul a notch or two before his time. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They let Brian Thomas Jr. come to them and pounced at the 37th pick. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Roman Wilson in No. 68 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A straight-up fair deal on Mohamed Kamara at the 113th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
No edge and no loss on Kamal Hadden in Round 4, Pick 36; it is a wash and a sensible one. A minor need, but a need all the same.
They paid sticker price for Ben Sinnott in the Round 5 slot, and that is fine. It fills a real need, too.
Jaylen Wright at pick No. 182 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They paid up for J.J. Weaver at the 229th pick when waiting would have done the job. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
