The Patriots spent the pick that matters most on Drake Maye, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B.
They will need Haladay to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. The interior defensive lineman spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. Edge rusher was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
Almost all the early capital went to that side of the ball.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the interior defensive lineman spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 3 they get the face of the franchise at fair value. A real need, handled.
Quinyon Mitchell in slot 34 lands just on the right side of the ledger. A minor need, but a need all the same.
They paid a round early for Malachi Corley in No. 68, more than the board wanted. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
No edge and no loss on Matt Goncalves in the Round 4 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
By-the-book stuff, Dallin Holker at pick 139 squarely in line with his ranking. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They took Jha'Quan Jackson at par in Round 6, Pick 37, which is nothing to complain about. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Xavier Thomas in the 224th pick, miles early. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They reached into another round for Cal Haladay, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
