The Cowboys torched the value chart for Taylen Green, taking him 81 spots sooner than anyone had him slotted. A D that will need time and luck to look better.
They banked enough surplus on Judkins to cover a lot of smaller sins. Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere.
The verdict is not kind, and fairly so; this class has a hill to climb.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 9 they get a No. 1 receiver at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
In the 11th overall pick they get a centerfielder for the defense. Need was not the driver here.
They barely believed it either: Omarion Hampton still on the board at pick 42. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Tate Ratledge in the Round 2 slot. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Smael Mondon Jr. at the 54th pick is the proof. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
The board had Jake Majors higher than No. 75, and the offensive lineman fell to them anyway. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
The board had cheaper options than Alfred Collins at pick No. 85, and it noticed. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They talked themselves into Jayden Higgins at Round 4, Pick 6, and the board did not agree. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Harold Perkins Jr.. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Quinshon Judkins in the Round 5 slot should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Somehow Cody Simon was still sitting there in No. 169, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Gunnar Helm in slot 170, miles early. It fills a real need, too.
Taylen Green in the 171st pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Davison Igbinosun at pick 186 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
J.Michael Sturdivant at the 209th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
