Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Emmanuel McNeil-Warren got past him. The 49ers do not have to explain a thing at pick No. 85. It nets out to a B-, which feels about right.
The cost of the Llewellyn reach is exactly the players who went right after him. It is not that Thomas is a bad player; it is that the 49ers had louder needs to answer first.
A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
They went early on Malachi Lawrence in the Round 2 slot, and the value did not follow. A need, and now a little less of one.
Chase Bisontis at the 76th overall pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Steal is underselling it; Emmanuel McNeil-Warren at No. 85 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
A quiet steal in pick No. 89: Malachi Fields for less than the market said. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Jack Endries in the 99th pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It fills a real need, too.
They robbed the room for Sam Hecht here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They paid up for Dametrious Crownover at slot 127 when waiting would have done the job. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A big swing on Max Llewellyn at Round 4, Pick 29, well ahead of any board in the building. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A curious use of No. 133. Quarterback and linebacker needed the pick; a safety in Jakobe Thomas did not.
Zxavian Harris in the Round 4 slot is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Kaytron Allen at Round 4, Pick 39 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
