The 49ers spent real capital to be 71 picks early on Eli Heidenreich, and the board is going to hold them to it.
That is a cornerback worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. They punted on running back, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
The dealing nudged the ledger their way without much fuss.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
A.J. Haulcy in the 57th pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Dani Dennis-Sutton in pick 58, miles early. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Jake Slaughter at Round 2, Pick 28 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They took Keylan Rutledge at par in pick No. 111, which is nothing to complain about. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Somehow Malik Muhammad was still sitting there in the 133rd overall pick, and they pounced on premier cornerback value. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Kevin Coleman Jr. this early at No. 138. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A quiet steal in the 139th pick: Joe Royer for less than the market said. The roster fit checks out.
A reach for Zxavian Harris in the 147th overall pick; a little patience would have been rewarded. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
