The rest of the league had time to spare on Taulia Tagovailoa; the Patriots did not wait, grabbing him 149 spots ahead at slot 127. They moved the roster forward and banked a B for it.
They have staked the next five years on Caleb Williams, which is the only story that really matters here. They banked enough surplus on Guerendo to cover a lot of smaller sins. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher.
The Patriots paired the rookies with proven help, De'Vondre Campbell leading the way.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 3rd overall pick they get a franchise quarterback at fair value.
Brenden Rice at the 68th pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Taulia Tagovailoa at Round 4, Pick 27 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Luke McCaffrey. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Marist Liufau slid further than he should have, and the Round 5 slot is lovely value for the linebacker. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
They took Jha'Quan Jackson at par in No. 171, which is nothing to complain about. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They reached into another round for David Ugwoegbu, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Not a spot anyone had flagged, which makes it a head-scratcher.
JD Bertrand at pick No. 182 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
They barely believed it either: Isaac Guerendo still on the board at pick 213. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
The board fumbled Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint all the way to the 229th pick, and they scooped it up. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
