The trade table was where it all came apart. The Commanders shipped out far more than they hauled back, and no amount of spin dresses up the bill. A D that will need time and luck to look better.
Zuhn III has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. They will answer for taking safety early while interior defensive lineman went begging. The interior defensive lineman spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
However the rest shakes out, Golday at that price is a win they earned.
It is a steep hill from here, and the grade knows it.
Pick-by-Pick
R1.7
· Pick 7
· Caleb Downs
· S
· rank 1
In Round 1, Pick 7 they get an enforcer at safety at fair value. Need was not the driver here.
R3.1
· Pick 65
· A.J. Haulcy
· S
· rank 50
They zigged when the board said zag, taking A.J. Haulcy at safety with interior defensive lineman open.
R3.19
· Pick 83
· Jake Golday
· OLB
· rank 58
They will replay Jake Golday at the 83rd overall pick for years; that is how good the value is. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R5.3
· Pick 143
· Nate Boerkircher
· TE
· rank 156
Nate Boerkircher in the 143rd pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R5.7
· Pick 147
· Drew Allar
· QB
· rank 153
No drama and no debate, Drew Allar went about where he belonged in No. 147. It fills a real need, too.
R5.22
· Pick 162
· CJ Daniels
· WR
· rank 138
CJ Daniels in pick No. 162 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R6.2
· Pick 183
· Domani Jackson
· CB
· rank 172
Domani Jackson slipping to slot 183 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R6.6
· Pick 187
· Aaron Anderson
· WR
· rank 174
A quiet steal in the Round 6 slot: Aaron Anderson for less than the market said. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R6.28
· Pick 209
· Kaelon Black
· RB
· rank 210
By-the-book stuff, Kaelon Black at slot 209 squarely in line with his ranking. A need, and now a little less of one.
R6.30
· Pick 211
· Trey Zuhn III
· OT
· rank 239
Trey Zuhn III at pick 211 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R7.1
· Pick 217
· TJ Hall
· CB
· rank 215
No edge and no loss on TJ Hall in the 217th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R7.7
· Pick 223
· Bryce Foster
· C
· rank 247
They left a pile of value on the table to take Bryce Foster this early at the Round 7 slot. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
