You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Texans did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high. The process wobbled, and the D is where it lands.
The Abrams-Draine pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. The Thrash steal is the beam this whole class leans on. Running back was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
Bottom line, they will be counting on several picks to beat their grades.
Pick-by-Pick
R1.24
· Pick 24
· Rome Odunze
· WR
· rank 11
In pick No. 24 they get a go-to option on the outside, outstanding value to boot. Exactly the need they had to hit.
R1.25
· Pick 25
· Jer'Zhan Newton
· DL
· rank 12
In slot 25 they get a wrecking ball inside, and a steal at that. The biggest hole, addressed.
R2.5
· Pick 37
· Chop Robinson
· DE-EDGE
· rank 37
Chop Robinson at pick 37 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R2.27
· Pick 59
· Edgerrin Cooper
· LB
· rank 61
Edgerrin Cooper in the 59th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R3.24
· Pick 87
· TreVeyon Henderson
· RB
· rank 88
By-the-book stuff, TreVeyon Henderson at No. 87 squarely in line with his ranking. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R3.26
· Pick 89
· Cooper Beebe
· OG
· rank 111
A wild overpay on Cooper Beebe in the Round 3 slot, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R3.27
· Pick 90
· Kris Abrams-Draine
· CB
· rank 119
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Kris Abrams-Draine. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
R4.2
· Pick 102
· Junior Colson
· LB
· rank 114
A reach on Junior Colson in the 102nd pick; the board had better options right there. It fills a real need, too.
R4.5
· Pick 105
· Javon Foster
· OT
· rank 132
A big swing on Javon Foster at pick 105, well ahead of any board in the building. The roster fit checks out.
R4.23
· Pick 123
· James Williams
· S
· rank 128
A market-rate safety, with the board and the slot shaking hands on James Williams. It adds depth where they could use a little.
R4.26
· Pick 126
· Jamari Thrash
· WR
· rank 110
Jamari Thrash slid further than he should have, and slot 126 is lovely value for the wide receiver. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R5.27
· Pick 163
· Joe Milton III
· QB
· rank 151
Value with a capital V on Joe Milton III in pick No. 163, a genuine coup. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R7.19
· Pick 239
· Arik Gilbert
· TE
· rank 265
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Arik Gilbert well ahead of where he belonged. A need, and now a little less of one.
R7.27
· Pick 247
· Demani Richardson
· S
· rank 245
They paid sticker price for Demani Richardson in the 247th pick, and that is fine. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
