The one hole that towered over the rest is filled. The Vikings spent their marquee pick on J.J. McCarthy, and for the first time in a while there is a real answer at quarterback.
The Devonshire pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. The cost of the Jean-Baptiste reach is exactly the players who went right after him. The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend.
They punted on safety, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 4 they get a No. 1 receiver. A clean fit for the roster.
J.J. McCarthy at pick No. 23 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
No edge and no loss on Matt Goncalves in No. 108; it is a wash and a sensible one. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Johnny Wilson at Round 4, Pick 29 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It fills a real need, too.
Marist Liufau in the Round 5 slot is fair value, right on his grade. A minor need, but a need all the same.
A wild overpay on Curtis Jacobs in the 167th pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Javontae Jean-Baptiste at the 177th overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Rasheen Ali well ahead of where he belonged. The roster fit checks out.
You do not let a cornerback like M.J. Devonshire reach Round 7, Pick 12 and blink. They did not. It adds depth where they could use a little.
