The Dolphins put a flag in the ground for Joe Milton III, 58 picks before anyone else would have, and the value took the hit. A dependable weekend that grades out a B+.
The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. Polk at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.
They will regret leaving interior defensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the interior defensive lineman spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
Payton Wilson slipping to the 56th pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
You do not let a wide receiver like Ja'Lynn Polk reach the 86th overall pick and blink. They did not. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
By-the-book stuff, Patrick Paul at pick 87 squarely in line with his ranking. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
DJ James slid further than he should have, and slot 101 is lovely value for the cornerback. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Gabriel Murphy at the Round 4 slot is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A tidy little value on Isaac Guerendo in Round 5, Pick 5, a step better than break-even. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Joe Milton III at slot 158 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Jaheim Bell in the 184th pick. The roster fit checks out.
The board had cheaper options than Javion Cohen at pick 189, and it noticed. A need, and now a little less of one.
Sione Vaki is a better player than pick No. 198 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
They barely believed it either: Darius Muasau still on the board at Round 7, Pick 20. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Jaden Shirden in the Round 7 slot is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
