The phones were a trap the Bears kept walking into, shipping out surplus on nearly every deal. There is no dressing it up: a F.
If Boyd pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. Whatever Caleb Williams becomes, the front office has tied its fortunes to the answer. The Solomon pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with interior defensive lineman, running back and other spots still on the board.
The interior defensive lineman hole is the one line item this class does not answer. The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not.
In the end, a class that has to defy its grades just to matter.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a passer to set the clock by. A real need, handled.
In Round 1, Pick 9 they get a weapon on the perimeter at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Darius Robinson in No. 33 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Sedrick Van Pran in the 75th pick. It fills a real need, too.
A curious use of slot 101. Interior defensive lineman, running back and other spots needed the pick; an OLB-EDGE in Javon Solomon did not.
They took Javon Foster at par in the 113th overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A wild overpay on Dwight McGlothern in pick No. 136, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A real head-scratcher, Khristian Boyd in pick 139 is miles ahead of his ranking. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
