Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Braelon Allen got past him. The Bears do not have to explain a thing at pick No. 186. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B-.
For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain. If Frost pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 1 they get a home-run threat at receiver at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
In the 9th pick they get an anchor for the offensive line. A real need, handled.
The board had D.J. James higher than the 75th overall pick, and the cornerback fell to them anyway. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Jalen McMillan at the Round 4 slot is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Sataoa Laumea in Round 5, Pick 4 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It fills a real need, too.
Taking Johnny Dixon in No. 146 is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A running back of that caliber at slot 186 is the definition of value, full stop. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
