The tape said wait; the Cowboys did not. Charles Turner III went at the Round 7 slot, a good 54 picks before the board was ready. More right than wrong, and a B to match.
That is a safety worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. The cornerback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
On the needs board they went 5 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most. Almost all the early capital went to that side of the ball.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
They paid up for Keon Coleman at Round 2, Pick 1 when waiting would have done the job. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
T'Vondre Sweat is a better player than the 56th overall pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Trey Benson in pick No. 87 is fair value, right on his grade. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Cedric Gray at the Round 3 slot is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Javon Foster in the 101st pick, miles early. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A tidy bit of business in No. 174, where Tykee Smith graded well above the range. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Kendall Milton in the Round 6 slot is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Jaylan Ford slipping to pick No. 216 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Good price on Nathan Thomas in slot 233, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Charles Turner III in pick 244 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
