Every swap seemed to tilt away from the Bears, and the value they bled adds up to real damage. It grades a D-, and the process earned it.
Caleb Williams gives the offense a face and a plan, and the grade leans heavily on whether he hits. They will regret leaving interior defensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it. If Nugent pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about.
The Newton steal is the beam this whole class leans on.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 1 they get the arm they will build around. A clean fit for the roster.
In Round 1, Pick 10 they get a difference-maker at receiver at fair value. A real need, handled.
Good price on Chris Braswell in No. 43, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Josh Newton slipping to the 74th overall pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A tidy little value on Blake Fisher in the 110th pick, a step better than break-even. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
The board had cheaper options than Drake Nugent at pick No. 126, and it noticed. It fills a real need, too.
They paid sticker price for Brandon Coleman in the Round 5 slot, and that is fine. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Theo Wease at pick 188 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
BJ Mayes in pick 231 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
