You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Bears did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high.
The whole projection now runs through Caleb Williams; hit there and everything else looks smarter. The running back hole is the one line item this class does not answer. On value alone, Muhammad III makes the weekend a net positive.
In short, the board sent warnings, and they will be hoping it was wrong.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 1 they get the face of the franchise. A clean fit for the roster.
In slot 10 they get a home-run threat at receiver at fair value. A real need, handled.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Graham Barton at pick 43. It fills a real need, too.
They took Byron Murphy II at par in the 74th pick, which is nothing to complain about. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Max Melton. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They robbed the room for Matt Goncalves here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. The roster fit checks out.
A tidy bit of business in pick No. 147, where Shemar Turner graded well above the range. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Somehow Moose Muhammad III was still sitting there in the 188th overall pick, and they pounced on premier wide receiver value. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Sheridan Jones in slot 231 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
