Chicago Bears

Nobody dealt better than the Bears this weekend: A-.

There was a run on nobody at that position, and the Bears started one anyway for McKade Mettauer, 40 picks ahead of schedule.

They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own. That Restrepo pick is the receipt they will wave around later.

It is a bet on later, and a defensible one for a team playing the long game.

In the end it comes back to Terrion Arnold, and a haul good enough to build on right away.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.26 · Pick 26 · Terrion Arnold · CB · rank 22
In pick 26 they get a sticky cover corner. The biggest hole, addressed.
R2.4 · Pick 36 · JT Tuimoloau · DE-EDGE · rank 29
A tidy little value on JT Tuimoloau in the 36th overall pick, a step better than break-even. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R3.11 · Pick 75 · Kingsley Suamataia · OT · rank 58
They let Kingsley Suamataia come to them and pounced at pick No. 75. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R3.27 · Pick 90 · Braden Fiske · DL · rank 90
Braden Fiske in slot 90 is fair value, right on his grade. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R4.5 · Pick 105 · Malachi Corley · WR · rank 85
Malachi Corley at Round 4, Pick 5 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It fills a real need, too.
R4.10 · Pick 110 · Blake Fisher · OT · rank 106
They did well to land Blake Fisher in No. 110, just ahead of his grade. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R4.27 · Pick 127 · Drake Nugent · C · rank 133
No edge and no loss on Drake Nugent in Round 4, Pick 27; it is a wash and a sensible one. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R4.31 · Pick 131 · Mike Sainristil · CB · rank 135
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Mike Sainristil. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R5.5 · Pick 141 · Jordan Travis · QB · rank 142
They paid sticker price for Jordan Travis in slot 141, and that is fine. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R5.10 · Pick 146 · Jaheim Bell · TE · rank 136
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Jaheim Bell in No. 146. A minor itch, scratched.
R5.37 · Pick 173 · Theo Wease Jr. · WR · rank 173
No drama and no debate, Theo Wease Jr. went about where he belonged in pick No. 173. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R5.38 · Pick 174 · Christian Jones · OT · rank 182
The board had cheaper options than Christian Jones at the Round 5 slot, and it noticed. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R5.39 · Pick 175 · Jaylen Harrell · DE-EDGE · rank 186
A reach on Jaylen Harrell in the 175th overall pick; the board had better options right there. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R6.2 · Pick 177 · Jase McClellan · RB · rank 196
A big swing on Jase McClellan at pick 177, well ahead of any board in the building. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R6.11 · Pick 186 · Steve Linton · LB-EDGE · rank 188
Steve Linton at the 186th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R6.19 · Pick 194 · Tatum Bethune · LB · rank 208
They jumped the gun on Tatum Bethune, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R6.40 · Pick 215 · Akheem Mesidor · DL-EDGE · rank 224
A premium they did not need to pay, Akheem Mesidor a notch or two before his time. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R7.12 · Pick 232 · McKade Mettauer · OG · rank 272
A real head-scratcher, McKade Mettauer in slot 232 is miles ahead of his ranking. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R7.17 · Pick 237 · Nathaniel Watson · LB · rank 231
A reasonable price with a little left over, Nathaniel Watson in Round 7, Pick 17. A need, and now a little less of one.
R7.21 · Pick 241 · Evan Williams · S · rank 246
By-the-book stuff, Evan Williams at pick 241 squarely in line with his ranking. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
R7.25 · Pick 245 · Xavier Restrepo · WR · rank 223
Xavier Restrepo at the Round 7 slot is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. The roster fit checks out.
