New England Patriots

The Patriots cashed the board's mistake on Ward: A.

You could see the war room lean forward. Cam Ward at the 228th pick is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did. One of the weekend's best, top to bottom, and a A to show for it.

They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own. The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer. The Braden Smith deal gives the class an established piece to lean on.

Few war rooms will sleep better than this one tonight.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.11 · Pick 11 · Travis Hunter · CB · rank 1
In the 11th pick they get a press-man option on the boundary, and a steal at that. Need was not the driver here.
R2.9 · Pick 41 · Tre Harris · WR · rank 17
Tre Harris in the Round 2 slot should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R3.8 · Pick 72 · Jahdae Barron · S · rank 28
Jahdae Barron in No. 72 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R3.21 · Pick 85 · Walter Nolen · DT · rank 18
Somehow Walter Nolen was still sitting there in Round 3, Pick 21, and they pounced on premier interior defensive lineman value. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R4.7 · Pick 108 · Earnest Greene III · OT · rank 47
A top-tier offensive lineman at a bargain, Earnest Greene III in slot 108, plain and simple. A need, and now a little less of one.
R5.6 · Pick 144 · Deontae Lawson · LB · rank 51
You do not let a linebacker like Deontae Lawson reach pick 144 and blink. They did not. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
R7.2 · Pick 216 · Devin Neal · RB · rank 61
Circle this one: Devin Neal at pick No. 216 is a fall that decides a draft. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R7.4 · Pick 218 · Sonny Styles · S · rank 50
Steal is underselling it; Sonny Styles at the 218th overall pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R7.14 · Pick 228 · Cam Ward · QB · rank 7
A quarterback of that caliber at the 228th pick is the definition of value, full stop. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
