Call it larceny. Nicholas Singleton sat on the board until Round 7, Pick 19, and the Texans did not need to be asked twice. More right than wrong, and a B to match.
They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it. Reaching for McLaughlin left real value on the table behind him.
Job largely done: running back settled and 6 of 8 of the wish list covered. Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 19th pick they get a disruptive interior force. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
By-the-book stuff, Dylan Fairchild at pick 53 squarely in line with his ranking. A need, and now a little less of one.
Taking Andrew Mukuba in pick No. 118 is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
A linebacker of that caliber at the 120th overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They paid sticker price for Joshua Gray in slot 164, and that is fine. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They went early on Seth McLaughlin in No. 187, and the value did not follow. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They robbed the room for Oronde Gadsden II here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. The roster fit checks out.
Nicholas Singleton in the Round 7 slot is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Deion Burks in Round 7, Pick 23 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
