The board owed the Texans one, and it paid up: Barrett Carter, the No. 82 name on the board, sitting there at the Round 5 slot like a gift left on the doorstep.
If Griffith pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
They went 7 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for. They came away with juice, if not much beef up front.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a centerpiece for the ground game, outstanding value to boot. The biggest hole, addressed.
They will replay Emeka Egbuka at pick No. 53 for years; that is how good the value is. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Gunnar Helm at the 84th pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A need, and now a little less of one.
Good price on Jake Majors in pick 97, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Antwaun Powell-Ryland in No. 120 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They robbed the room for Barrett Carter here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A clean, defensible pick in slot 164 with a little surplus value in Jaeden Roberts. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Thor Griffith at Round 7, Pick 19 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
