You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Bengals did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high.
They will need Wilson to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. The cornerback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. It is a win-now wager, and the future is the stake.
In short, a weekend the front office will want to forget in a hurry.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a matchup weapon at tight end. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Jordan Morgan at pick 34 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
No edge and no loss on Braden Fiske in the 49th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
By-the-book stuff, Blake Corum at the 80th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Johnny Wilson. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They did well to land Sione Vaki in No. 175, just ahead of his grade. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
