Somebody in the Round 5 slot was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Cowboys sat still while Brenden Rice, the No. 121 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium.
They will need Gray to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. The dealing nudged the ledger their way without much fuss.
Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 32 they get a plug-and-play piece up front. Exactly the need they had to hit.
No drama and no debate, Zach Frazier went about where he belonged in pick 56. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A clean, defensible pick in No. 73 with a little surplus value in Max Melton. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A wild overpay on Cedric Gray in the 87th pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They talked themselves into Braelon Allen at the 95th overall pick, and the board did not agree. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Brenden Rice in slot 174 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Javontae Jean-Baptiste in Round 6, Pick 26 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Circle this one: Kalen King at the Round 6 slot is a fall that decides a draft. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Jaylan Ford at pick No. 233 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
The board had Garret Greenfield higher than pick 244, and the offensive lineman fell to them anyway. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Jalen Coker in slot 249 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
