The Joshua Gray pick is the one that will follow the Chargers into the fall. They took him 35 spots ahead of his grade, and the board is not shy about saying so. A dependable weekend that grades out a B-.
They punted on interior defensive lineman, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. It is not that McKinstry is a bad player; it is that the Chargers had louder needs to answer first. Edge rusher is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
Good work on the whole, with interior defensive lineman the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went defensive back with Kool-Aid McKinstry while clear needs at interior defensive lineman, cornerback and other spots sat open.
Kris Jenkins in the 44th overall pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A premium they did not need to pay, TreVeyon Henderson a notch or two before his time. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending slot 112 on Beau Brade with interior defensive lineman, cornerback and other spots unsolved.
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Devontez Walker. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They reached into another round for Joshua Gray, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
The board had cheaper options than Theo Johnson at the 233rd overall pick, and it noticed. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
