The Cowboys did not reach, did not trade up, did not blink. They just waited, and Tommy Eichenberg fell into No. 233. Call it a sensible B, earned the boring way.
Reaching for Jean-Baptiste left real value on the table behind him. That cornerback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. They went 4 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Almost all the early capital went to that side of the ball.
Good work on the whole, with cornerback the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a true top target at a price that makes it sweeter. The biggest hole, addressed.
Taliese Fuaga at the 56th overall pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
The board fumbled Payton Wilson all the way to pick 87, and they scooped it up. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Javontae Jean-Baptiste in No. 174, miles early. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
A conviction pick on Frank Gore Jr. at pick No. 216 that the board grades a round light. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A linebacker of that caliber at slot 233 is the definition of value, full stop. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Matt Lee in the 244th pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
