Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Packers spent slot 202 on Dominique Hampton, a name most had 33 spots down the list.
If one pick saves this weekend, it is Jacobs. They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 25th overall pick they get protection for the quarterback. A real need, handled.
Tyler Nubin in pick No. 41 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Chris Braswell at Round 2, Pick 26. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Brenden Rice at No. 88 is a conviction pick that outran the value. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Maason Smith at slot 91 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A need, and now a little less of one.
They jumped the gun on Jarrian Jones, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They reached a country mile for Tanor Bortolini at the Round 5 slot, and the board is aghast. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Value said wait; Dominique Hampton in the 202nd overall pick says they were not listening. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Curtis Jacobs in the 219th pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Value with a capital V on Tylan Grable in slot 245, a genuine coup. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They took Tyler Owens at par in No. 255, which is nothing to complain about. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
