Boards are made to be trusted, and the Packers shredded theirs for James Williams. He came off 43 spots early, and the room will hear about it.
The Phillips pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. Small wins on the phones, but wins all the same.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a long-term starter on the line at fair value.
A clean, defensible pick in the 37th overall pick with a little surplus value in Quinyon Mitchell. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Graham Barton at No. 57 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A need, and now a little less of one.
Brenden Rice in pick No. 69 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They reached into another round for Darius Robinson, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Value said wait; James Williams in Round 3, Pick 29 says they were not listening. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Circle this one: Khyree Jackson at pick 129 is a fall that decides a draft. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Braelon Allen at the 159th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Ty'Ron Hopper in No. 163 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A minor need, but a need all the same.
You do not let a cornerback like Andru Phillips reach slot 203 and blink. They did not. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They barely believed it either: Marcellas Dial still on the board at pick No. 216. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Value with a capital V on Jase McClellan in Round 7, Pick 23, a genuine coup. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Demorie Tate at the Round 7 slot is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A wild overpay on Chad Lindberg in the 251st pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
