There is reaching, and then there is Jay Toia at the 171st pick. The Cowboys jumped the board by 154 and dared it to prove them wrong.
The Lawson value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. They punted on cornerback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but cornerback.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a workhorse for the backfield, and a steal at that.
JT Tuimoloau at No. 42 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A minor need, but a need all the same.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Alfred Collins in pick 73, miles early. A need, and now a little less of one.
A wild overpay on Donovan Jackson in Round 5, Pick 11, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Deontae Lawson in slot 169 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A reach for Theo Wease Jr. in the 170th overall pick; a little patience would have been rewarded. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Value said wait; Jay Toia in slot 171 says they were not listening. It fills a real need, too.
They reached a country mile for Kyren Lacy at the 186th pick, and the board is aghast. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Ollie Gordon II at the 209th overall pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
